Monday, Monday. How was your weekend, folks? Get out and about? Weather positively screams fall-ish. Felt a tad humid to me yesterday but still beautiful to behold.
In one of the arguments about how food trucks operate with an unfair advantage over brick and mortar, the operating costs get pulled up. In a way, yes it is cheaper to run a truck over a B&M. But there are also the same costs that are considered with the uptick in food materials costs as well as … gasoline. A few trucks (Frysmith comes to mind in LA) run on biodiesel but the vast majority run on petrol. Here’s my take on it: yes, food trucks create unfair competition. But any business is suppose to say that anything that challenges what they do is unfair competition. Other food truck bloggers in the Bay Area are unfair competition for me because they pull eyes away from my words. In San Mateo I think there are at least 10 sushi restaurants. I don’t see them fire bombing each other with words or incendiary devices but the downtown merchants are up in arms that the food truck round ups that happen are destroying their businesses. In Redwood City, on that stretch between the train tracks and El Camino Real on Broadway, there are about 20 restaurants. Two of which are the amazing iDumpling and Crouching Tiger. I don’t see anyone from either restaurant pissed off that the other exists within two store fronts of each other. If your product is good, food truck or brick and mortar, then people will be there. My family does food truck food and brick and mortar food. Should there be food truck ‘ghettos’ like SoMa Streat Eats where people can find all the trucks in one spot? If a municipality can handle it, sure. That would be nice. But you know the brick and mortar would still complain. Competition is a reality in the US. Microsoft vs everyone in the 90s. Apple vs Samsung now. It’s the way of business.
