Among the stories that go before city councils and such is how food trucks are destroying the Mom and Pop restaurants that are struggling to survive. Here is another take on this story. http://mobile-cuisine.com/features/the-big-lie-mobile-food-vendors-cause-of-restaurant-closings/?wt=3 On one truck a few months back I talked with a woman who is a local restaurant owner (who has a great Mediterranean restaurant) who was working one of the food trucks as a favor to a friend. She doesn’t see that food trucks can’t work with restaurants. People will go to both.
From a personal perspective, when my husband and I are having a date night or celebrating an event, we don’t automatically think “what food trucks are close by” but brick and mortar restaurants. Food trucks for us are something we do as a family or with friends. We enjoy our food truck experiences but we also love the brick and mortar experience. With more food truck operators going brick and mortar (Roy Choi’s two restaurants in LA and Curry Up Now’s burgeoning empirelet here in NoCal), it’s hard to continue to spout the line that food trucks are hurting the brick and mortar restauranteurs.
