I like to eat. Is that a crime?

Monthly Archives: May 2011

The year is half over. The weather clearly has not been told of this because it is still stuck in March. I’m sure there are some that are attributing this to some sin of humanity with a deity that is crying. But I just think that it’s a flukey weather quirk. It’s like I told my hubs when he first moved to California, we can have pontoons on our cars and we’re still in a drought condition. So, get your kayak out if you need to and find yourself a food truck to comfort your soul with.

After a gloriously sunny afternoon, we are greeted with the June gloom in May. Eh, the month is nearly over. A long weekend beckons us to kick off our cares and unwind. My kid’s school is having Hawaiian Day so there were about 800 kids running loose with various aloha print, leis and kukui nut necklaces getting into the spirit. Maybe we should take a page from their book and let our hair down with some fun? Start a long weekend off right with something special off the food trucks because, let’s face it, it’s all good. Right?

Don’t forget, kids, Edgewood Eats on Monday. Who’s on tap for the end of the weekend party? BBQ Kalbi, John’s Ice Cream Truck, Iz-It, Chairman Bao, MoBowl, Butterscotch On The Go, Armadillo Willy’s and Tikka Bytes. Besides the treats off Butterscotch on the Go, you know what else is sweet? Throughout June, a portion of truck proceeds will be donated to InnVision The Way Home, Silicon Valley’s largest provider of housing and services for the homeless. www.innvision.org.

Hard to believe that my little guy gets out of school in two weeks. That he’ll be foot loose and fancy free for a couple of months before he gets back to the slog of elementary school. Don’t you remember the days when you’d go to school, learn some basics, have vacations off where you did nothing more interesting than maybe go to camp for part of it and watch far too many bad commercials between reruns of I Love Lucy or Gilligan’s Island? I remember seeing Bryman School ads that enticed those sitting at home to come to their school to learn how to be a medical technician or a dental assistant. These days, kids go from school into camps that teach them something that will help them get into Stanford or Cal or MIT but rarely, just have fun. My little guy is hitting local camps every other week that will be fun rather than an educational experience. Plus our Mondays at Edgewood Eats. That’s educational. He learns about how people function as a society (psychology and sociology), food (science) and how many times Mom can say “son of a biscuit” at bad drivers.

For those of you who are curious and not sure what this food truck scene is all about, check out this from Eye on the Bay. http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2011/05/23/eye-on-the-bay-street-eats-around-the-bay-52311/

There have been a few articles on the demise of the food truck scene. Primarily, gourmet food trucks because there will always be a need for food trucks any place where food options are limited or non existent (like industrial parks). Another one popped up today. http://ht.ly/4XO7P It’s about the LA food truck scene but you can apply it to any place that is starting to have a thriving scene.

Granted, I’ve been doing this blog for less than a quarter and pretty much been an observer for the last two since I first heard about the Kogi Truck in LA. So my take is pretty much about as interesting as watching any newbie on the scene pontificate about things to a room full of veterans, but I do know a few things.

There are a lot of food trucks out there. There are a lot of them who do the same thing if you boil it down (Seoul on Wheels – BBQ Kalbi – MoGo BBQ or The (Old Port Lobster )Shackmobile – Sam’s Chowder Mobile or The WOW Truck – Hapa SF etc). But each have their own unique take on things. Do I have my favourites? Duh. (Sorry, Charlie Sheen, I ain’t payin’ your ass one red farthing for using a term I’ve used since I was four.) There are some trucks who are out there who take a cuisine and make it sing. There are some that think they know what they are doing but still really need to make adjustments. And there are others who are trying to find their footing. Everyone will probably argue about which one is better and it’s really all about taste.

So, what does that mean? A lot of these articles point out that these trucks get rolled out with these chefs/entrepreneurs thinking, ahh, quick buck. But not necessarily. You’re throwing down a starting cost of $100K or more for a fully kitted up truck not including the ingredients for your mise en place to create your food, your staff, gasoline, permits… It is a pricey thing. Not as pricey as oh say brick and mortar which is crazy expensive. But it’s not for the faint of heart.  (Oh and it’s also not for those who think you get time or vacation off. No. Someone has to keep the damn’d thing running and it ain’t the Keebler elves. Your days may be longer since you probably’re doing your prep at one of the rental kitchens before transferring to the truck. And brick and mortar doesn’t break down and have to get towed to the shop either.)

Does this mean that we’ve got a Darwin thing going down? Survival of the fittest? Or the tastiest? Will a truck with a certain cuisine find that they are having to talk to others of their cuisine to make sure that they aren’t all at the same place at the same time so they don’t step on each other’s toes? Like at Edgewood Eats. You don’t see BBQ Kalbi and MoGo at the same time. Or the Shackmobile alongside Sam’s. You see Chairman Bao, Sancho’s, MoGo, Shackmobile, etc. But not an overlap. (Some of you may be thinking, but Foodbitchess, Aren’t all Asian foods just the same thing with more garlic or cilantro than others? Au contraire, mon frere. Go back to the end of the line and do some homework.) You don’t see two Filipino trucks or two Korean trucks or two Thai trucks together. You see a single of each. Of course, I’ve only been to Edgewood, I haven’t had the priv of going to OTG in the City and I hope they can convince San Mateo to host them.

Personally, I like to think that there is room out there for everyone. But the realistic side of me sees the other bits of this equation. Not everyone can make it. Whether it’s because they can’t compete with better tasting food from another truck or they simply drop from exhaustion or they run out of capital, it becomes all an issue. Food trucks are a great thing because they give people a chance to casually explore other cuisines but most of them aren’t cheap which could be the down fall of them. There is only so many times someone can fork out $15 for lunch before it becomes something of a liability to their finances. And some trucks make sure you get a lot of bang for your buck so you don’t feel the need to order a few extra items to pad out your sandwich or burrito or whatever you ordered. I’ve had burritos off trucks that were  more than I could finish which was fully worth the $7 or $8 I spent and stretched out to a second meal. And in these financially uncertain times, when many households have found themselves going from eating out 5 days a week to eating out once every five weeks, it makes a difference.

And as much as I understand that these food truck vendors are only charging a modest amount most of the time to cover the costs of operating I think that many times, you will find some people out there who think that because they are doing fusion haute cuisine, they can charge the same price as a brick and mortar. Without thinking that sure, you’ve got a tasty meal here but people are considering that you’re giving it to them in a biodegradable container that they are shlepping back to their car or up to their cubicle. It’s not on fancy-ish plates with pretty flatware with the symbol of the restaurant stamped on it. It’s a brown pressed paper box. So it’s hard for many people to swallow $12 for a kobe beef burger made with carmelized onions picked by blind virgin nuns in a field in Italy. Sure in the restaurant it’ll be $45 to $60 but there is also some person asking if you liked it. And serving it to you on a plate that has the cerulean blue logo you spent money to design.

Ultimately, it’s all about what the market will bear. Brick and mortar will resent food trucks and some will send some out to even out the business. In n Out has a burger truck but that isn’t sent out at random, you gotta request it. And pay for it. Would I jump up and down to Jack In The Box’s truck or the Taco Bell Mobile? Hell no. Would I be curious about what Bay Area resident celeb chefs like Tyler Florence, Michael Chiarello, Tracy des Jardin, Hubert Keller, Gary Danko or Charles Phan have to offer in the limited space? Sure. Heck if even the great Thomas Keller decided to resurrect the concept of his own interpretation of In n Out as a food truck, that could be really interesting (please, Chef Keller, I’d love to see your interpretation of an animal style fries with fois gras). In fact, that would be a great side business for many chefs – cater to swanks out of a food truck high end stuff. You read it here first, folks. If someone hasn’t come up with this idea yet, then if you find that Ming Tsai out on the East Coast is doing this or Todd English, tell ‘em I want my cut.

What I think will serve food trucks well is if they continue to be friendly with each other and the people who patronize them. I love going to a food truck and seeing everyone interacting. People who drive to a corporate setting to check out a new cuisine or truck and talking with others about what is good. It’s the sense of community that you don’t get sitting at Tomatina or Chili’s. A food truck is people with a common desire who want to share this experience.

So, bloggers, critics and other food trucks: don’t be haters. We can all get along. Just don’t be a dick about it.

OK, enough with the overcast. Enough with the rain. I am a Californian and I get that we need as much rain as possible or else we will be in a drought season for the summer (I have a feeling that if we were floating around in pontoon cars they would say we were going to have a drought summer). But, this rainy grey is not making me happy. Or many others I encounter in my daily perambulations. No, we want a nice day. Sun, a little breeze, blue skies, maybe some warmth.

But, you know, don’t let this blech weather inhibit your need for feed. Get thee to a food truck. Sup with others and get a little sunshine and warmth from another human being’s smile. Life is far too short to remain dismal about the uncontrollable.

By the way, folks, I will be taking Friday through Tuesday off. I’m heading back East to Boston. Land of ‘pahk yah cah in Hahvahd yahd.’ I won’t be near Harvard for all I know. But my friends have said if we get near one of their marvelous food trucks, they are not adverse to stopping and partaking of the bounty. So, if you know anyone who has a food truck in Boston, tell ‘em to watch out for the wacky Californian with a yen for diesel powered rolling kitchens.

It’s Monday. A rough night for our household. My son had a restless night which meant both of us rested less. He has managed to get through flu season unscathed until now. How can I tell when my child is sick? He doesn’t eat. He is listless. Unlike his old Mom he doesn’t sleep endlessly. Unfortunately.

So, I’m sorry that I didn’t do a lunch thing today. It’s tough being a Mom with a needy child.

But, tonight, we will venture out for Edgewood Eats in Palo Alto. The trucks are donating portions of their money to http://www.embraceglobal.org/. Who is gonna be there tonight? Hapa SF, MoBowl, Iz It Fresh Grill, Sancho’s Taqueria, Little Green Cyclo, The Old Port Lobster Shackmobile, BBQ Kalbi, House of Siam on Wheels, John’s Ice Cream Truck, Tikka Bytes, Butterscotch on the Go…

I admit it. I love me some barbeque. It’s hard to find barbeque that really satisfies. I mean, sorry Armadillo Willy’s, but you’re not what I’m looking for. Spending time in Texas showed me some good barbeque so in the back of my addlepated head, I have been looking for that taste again.

I’d followed Southern Sandwich Company on Twitter for while. Curious, always missing them, I had waited. Today, they were close enough for me to get to. Hidden behind the behemoth of Electronic Arts, cordoned behind yellow plastic chain link was the black truck issuing the smoky joy of Southern Sandwich Company. A line had formed but moved really fast. Southern Sandwich keeps it simple. A few items, most quick and easy to prep and box up.

Today, for my first try, I had the barbeque beef brisket sandwich ($7), the tator wedges ($1.50) and the hush puppies ($1.50). Figured that would be a good way to start though the cole slaw did seem kind of enticing and I wanted to save them to eat with the baby back ribs another day.

The brisket sandwich is on a soft, seeded hamburger bun. They give it a grilling so it’s warm and inviting. Inside was a pretty good amount of beef, about a cup and a half, with some sauteed onions and a few pickle rounds. There are no condiments, those you can get on your own (they have ketchup, Carolina vinegar sauce, regular tangy tomato based bbq sauce, sweet and hot mustard, mayo) but it has a pat of butter that you are encouraged to put on the brisket and let melt. The brisket was smoky and chewy (in a good way) with a nice crust with a tender, moist interior. If the butter doesn’t lubricate the sandwich enough for you, I liked the Carolina vinegar for its sweet and heat. It was a cleaner taste than the sweet mustard or the bbq sauce for me but I’m not a bbq sauce fan.

The hush puppies were ping pong ball sized crispy corn confections. Inside was a polenta like interior dotted with onion and herbs. It was dense with a hit of black pepper on occasion with a sweetness. Oddly enough, it wasn’t greasy but there were a trace of oil that came through. The corn meal interior was sandy, in a good way.

If you like fries with your sandwich, that is the main reason to get the tater wedges. They are coated, spicy and not much really to recommend them beyond eating the sweet and spicy mustard (which I have to admit I dunked the fries and the hush puppies in because I liked it so much).

If you want to get your bbq fix on and find yourself within striking distance of the Southern Sandwich Company, give ‘em a try. I’ll be back.
